A Magic Mushroom Dispensary is Opening in Kitchener
Magicmushroomsdispensary.ca is opening in Kitchener in response to a surge in demand for the mushrooms containing the hallucinogenic chemical psilocybin. The Waterloo region already has two locations of FunGuyz, which is Canada’s largest psilocybin storefront chain. The company’s new storefront in Kitchener will be open to the public and will offer a variety of mushroom products including edibles. The store will ask customers to sign a waiver and show a photo ID to purchase the product. FunGuyz does not sell to anyone under the age of 19.
The fungi known as magic mushrooms contain a naturally occurring compound called psilocybin, which changes how your brain works and makes you hallucinate. People have used them for thousands of years in spiritual and religious rituals, and they became popular during the 1960s counter culture among those seeking shamanistic enlightenment. Today, they are taken by many people for recreational use or to help treat mental health issues like anxiety and PTSD.
Magic Mushrooms and Mental Health: Separating Fact from Fiction
While addiction is rare with psychedelics, it can happen if you take them too often or use them with other drugs. You can also build a tolerance to the effects, so you need to take higher doses to feel the same effect. There is also the possibility of a bad trip or a flashback, which can be frightening.
While there is limited research on the long-term effects of psilocybin, it’s been shown to have antidepressant-like effects and can reduce anxiety, depression and feelings of loneliness. However, psilocybin can increase serotonin levels, so it should be avoided by those taking certain medications such as the SSRI family of antidepressants (Celexa, Cipramil, Zoloft), which can lead to dangerously high serotonin levels and a rare, but potentially fatal condition called serotonin syndrome.
