Most of the items shown on the show are brought in by people who have little to no idea what their item is worth. This allows the pawn experts to lowball the seller and still make a profit.

For example, if the Pawn Stars think that an item is worth $5,000 retail they will offer you $5,000 for it but that amount is far below what an actual collector would pay at auction or in a highly specialized market. This is because they are trying to make a profit and not just sell an item for what it was bought for.

Steve Grad, the lead autograph authenticator for PSA/DNA Authentication Services, which does authentication for many of the stars on Pawn Stars, says that they have seen about a 15%-20% uptick in their sales over the past year since appearing on the show. He explains that this is because the stars on Pawn Stars have a huge following, and many of their fans will contact them after seeing them on the show to purchase autographs from them.
